B - Teaching EDGE Discussion (Word document   PDF file

EDGE (explain, demonstrate, guide, enable) is a process for training. This key to this  training method is use it for all teaching opportunities.

Explain the trainer explains how something is done.
Demonstrate after the trainer explains, the trainer demonstrates while explaining the subject matter again.
Guide the learner tries the skill while the trainer guides him through it.
Enable the trainee works on his own under the watchful eye of the trainer.  The trainer’s role is now to remove any obstacles to success, which enables the learner to succeed.

An example:

A Patrol Leader explains to his assistant how to bandage a badly twisted ankle.

He demonstrates how to bandage an ankle with an ace bandage from his patrol first aid kit.

The assistant patrol leader is given the Ace bandage and encouraged to bandage the patrol leader’s ankle.  Several times the assistant has has trouble starting the wrapping.   The patrol leader patiently and persistently guides his assistant until he “gets it right”.

The patrol leader has the assistant bandage several ankles so that he masters the skill.  Once mastered, the assistant confidently bandages any ankle.

The patrol leader asks his assistant to be prepared to teach all of the other members of the patrol how to bandage an ankle at the next Troop meeting.

C - Troop Progress Discussion (Word document   PDF file
