Owasippe Scout Reservation, Camp Blackhawk - Summer Camp (top)Summer camp is a great opportunity for scouts for personal development and advancement. It is strongly encouraged that all scouts attend. This summer we will be returning to Chicago Area Council's Owasippe Scout Reservation, Camp Blackhawk in lower peninsula Michigan, from July 3 through 9, 2005. Several of our scouts visited Owasippe in the spring of 2002 when they participated in a BioBlitz inventory of the camp's flora and fauna. More information will be avaialable at the manditory Parents Meeting in June. Senior scouts in the troop can also participate in Owasippe's High Adventure program, Manistee Quest. Also, Owasippe has a family camp with cabins and programs for spouses and siblings, Camp Reneker. Follow the links below for additional information. Once again we will cross Lake Michigan in the new Lake Express car ferry that began operations between Milwaukee, WI and Muskegon, MI (approx. 20 minutes from camp) last spring. There will also likely be a car or two driving around the lake for those unable to take the ferry. More information on this option will follow as it becomes available.

The Flaming Arrow Patrol had a lot of first timers and got hung up at one of the events. But they finished strong in their last few events and will do much better next year as they now know what to expect. Photos coming soon.
August 2002: Devils Lake State ParkIn August we went up to Devils Lake State Park in Wisconsin next to The Wisconsin Dells. We had a great time there. We went for a hike with a geologist up the Devils Lake bluffs. He showed and told us all about the history of Devils Lake and how the bluff were formed. He also helped us get some of the requirements for Geology Merit Badge. Here are some pictures from the outing....

February Nature Museum & Zoo TripWe visited the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in the morning and the Lincoln Park Zoo in the afternoon for a day trip on Saturday, February 15 with an unplanned stop at the Lincoln Park Conservatory on the way to the museum. The museum biologists are working the The Nature Conservancy in taking a census of locally endangered butterfly species and habitats in order to breed and reintroduce them into the wild. The biology staff at the McHenry County Community College are participants and are actively breeding Buckeye butterflies for reintroduction in McHenry. Trip LinksPhotos
